Wooden Canoe Plans - How to Choose the Right Plans for You
Posted on: June 20, 2011
Wooden canoe plans are imperative when you are planning to build your own canoe boat. It is needed for you to successfully plan different aspects of the boat such as dimensions and length as well as the materials you are going to use.
A thing to note about canoes is that you should strike a certain balance between the width and length of the boat. The narrower the boat, the speedy it is. However, with very narrow boats, balance can be compromised. Therefore, it is essential that the plan that you're going to use is perfectly suited to your preference and purpose in this aspect of boat design.
Additionally, you also need to decide on the size of your canoe. If you wish to build a canoe with a capacity of two or three person, 16-18 feet canoe should do the job. A single seater canoe would have a length of around 12 feet. So, right within the planning stage of the boat construction, you should have a clear idea on the size of the canoe you'll need.
Of all canoe designs available, wooden canoes are probably one of the easiest canoe type to build. Most of us would have the basic woodworking skills needed to handle wood. Furthermore, you wouldn't have a problem procuring that much additional tools to build a simple wooden canoe.
Of course, if you don't have the time to invest in such a project, one good alternative for you would be to buy a wooden canoe boat kit. It would still require some effort on your part to assemble but it's definitely less labor intensive compared to building a canoe from scratch.
However, if you can spare the time to indulge in such a project, I would still strongly suggest you build your own boat using a wooden canoe plan you've chosen. This would allow you to easily customize the boat to suit your own specifications. It can also prove to be more cost effective.
I cannot stress enough the importance of having the right wooden canoe plans in the success of a boat building project. Plans should give you an idea beforehand of the processes involved in building a specific boat design. It will give you an idea of whether you have the budget, tools and skill set to build a specific boat.
Additionally, the quality of your chosen wooden canoe plan will spell the success or failure of a given boat building project. That's why I place high importance on the detailed and elaborate instruction provided by the plan as a basis of its quality. Personally, being a visual person, I find illustrations to be a huge help too so that also happens to be one of the criteria when I choose boat plans.
